Symptoms of a failing compressor

Why compressors fail

Ninety percent of premature compressor failures trace to one of three causes:

1. Leaks elsewhere in the system — a leaking strut or air spring forces the compressor to run constantly until it overheats. Always pressure-test the system; otherwise the new compressor dies the same death.
2. Dry air circuit — moisture in the system corrodes the piston and cylinder. Desiccant in the valve block dries out after years; replacing it with the compressor extends its life.
